Studied at the Petersburg Conservatory, 1913-1918. Studied at the Petersburg Conservatory, 1913-1918. Pupil of N. Sokolov, N. Cherepnin and M. Steinberg.
Career
Began composing while at school, 1898-1906. As a student at Kiev University, studied composition. Changed to Petersburg University, and graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1912.
In charge of the music department of the Bolshoi Theatre of Drama (now the Gorkii Academic Bolshoi Theatre), 1919-1928. Musical director of the Pushkin Theatre, 1928-1934. Professor at the Moscow Conservatory from 1939.
Frequent appearances abroad.
