Ivan Cury was born on June 29, 1937, in New York City, New York, United States. He is a son of Joel and Anne Cury.
Ivan Cury studied at Carnegie Mellon University where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1959. Then he attended Boston University and in 1960 received a Master of Fine Arts degree.
Ivan Cury started his career at the age of ten when he appeared as Bobby Benson on The Bobby Benson Show. After graduating from Boston University he started to work as an instructor at Hunter College of the City University of New York in 1962. One year later he started to work at WNDT-TV as a makeup artist but soon he became a director and producer. Cury also worked for two years as a producer and director at CBS-TV. In 1972 he became a Vice president for creative affairs at MJA Advertising. He held this post for six years and after left it in order to become an assistant professor at the University of California. In 1990 Cury became an associate professor of communication studies at California State University and still works here.
Ivan Cury is also a producer and director of commercials, sitcoms and day time dramas such as The Doctors, Up and Coming, Camera Three and The Young and the Restless. He served as a judge for the Emmy's ACE (Accepting the Challenge of Excellence) and for the DGA (Directors Guild of America Award) awards. Cury also wrote Directing and Producing for Television and TV Commercials: How to Make Them: or, How Big is the Boat?

Ivan Cury married Lynda Ruth Stone on June 25, 1962. They divorced on June 28, 1987. Later Cury married Barbara Harris. He has four children.
