Dee received a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Missouri in 1956. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree from the same university.
Dee served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1960. He began his career as a president of Ardivan Press in 1960. A year later Ivan took a position of a vice president and editor-in-chief of Quadrangle Book. Also Ivan served as an associate editor of Chicago Tribune Book World from 1972 to 1973. In 1973, he was appointed an executive editor of Publications-Hall Syndicate. Then in 1974, Dee became editor-in-chief of Chicagoan Magazine.
In 1975, he held the position of a director of public affairs at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center. Since 1989 he has been a president of Ivan R. Dee, Inc.
On June 21, 1959 Ivan Dee married Sandra Cohen, with whom he divorced in 1973. On August 3, 1977 he married Phyllis Kirz, with whom he divorced in 1981. On April 15, 1989 Ivan married Barbara Burgess. They have five children.
