1930-1949 professor, from 1949 director, Soil Institute, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1946-1953 correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Wrote some 100 works on soil sci, particularly humus.
Devised original methods of analysing the composition of humus and established geographical pattern for the formation of humus in the soils of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Also devised new methods for the chemical analysis of soils.
