In 1921, Mikhail Stepanovich graduated from the Maryinsky (Saratov region) agricultural school. He finished the Saratov State Institute of Agriculture and Land Reclamation in 1925.
In 1931-1941, Mikhail Stepanovich was a professor at the Omsk Agricultural Institute. He was a professor at the Ulyanovsk Agricultural Institute in 1944-1945. In 1949-1950, he worked as a researcher at the West Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Since 1950 Mikhail Stepanovich had been working at the Voronezh Agricultural Institute: associate professor, professor, head of the Department of Soil Science (1950-1977).
Mikhail Stepanovich created the theory of the evolution of soil formation and mixing of landscape-soil zones of Western Siberia, built the original genetic classification of soils, and substantiated the conclusion about the progressive increase in climate aridity. He is the author of more than 160 works, including books: "Agricultural Technology of Cultivating Crops on the Washed-off Soils of the Slopes of the Voronezh Region" (Voronezh, 1960), "Ways to Increase Soil Fertility in the Voronezh Region" (Voronezh, 1960), "Land Reclamation of Sodic Soils" (Voronezh, 1972).
