Ivan Alekseevich Potapov started military service in 1737. He participated in the Seven Years’ War. He served predominantly in judicial and quartermaster departments. In 1763-1775 he was the Chief Commandant of the city of Kazan, then of the Fortress of Saint Dmitry (now Rostov-on-Don). He was the Governor of Voronezh since 1775.
Ivan Alekseevich suppressed the insurrection of a smallholder Sergeev, who claimed to be Peter III (1777). Since 1785 he headed the Order of public charity, was a trustee of educational institutions.
Ivan Alekseevich was the owner of the estate in the Semidubravnoe village, Zemlyansky District, and of the home on the Bolshaya Dvoryanskaya street in Voronezh (built in 1777-1779), which is now occupied by the Kramskoy Regional Museum of Fine Arts.
