As a child, he sang in the church choir.
From 1921 to 1927 Ivan Mikhailovich worked in a textile factory (village Sobinka Vladimir province).He worked as an engineer in Voronezh Forestry Trust.
The soloist of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow (1942-1959), performed about 40 parties, including Lovchiy ("Rusalka" by Alexander Dargomyzhsky), Narumov ("The Queen of Spades" by Pyotr Tchaikovsky), Marullo ("Rigoletto" by Giovanni Verdi's), Frederic ("Lakme" by Leo Delibe).
He participated in the film adaptation of Modest Mussorgsky's operas "Boris Godunov", "Khovanshchina". One of the organizers (1962) and activists of the Council of Veterans of the Bolshoi Stage.
