Ivan Sergevich worked as a teacher at Minsk Pedagogical Institute (now Belarusian State Pedagogical University) and Bialystok pedagogical institute (now Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology, University of Bialystok) (1938-1941). He was a secretary of the Bialystok Regional Committee of the Communist party of Belarus (since 1941). Deputy Director (1948-1953), director (1953-1964), divisional manager, senior researcher (since 1965) at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences (Belarusian SSR).
Author of a treatise on the history of Belarus during the Great Patriotic War. Editorial board member and one of the authors of The history of the Belarusian SSR (Minsk, 1954-1958), member of the main editorial Board of "History of the Belarusian SSR" (Minsk, 1972-1975).
