Original art education in Kiev and Warsaw. In 1889-1890 he studied at the school of the Society of the Encouragement of the Arts in Warsaw. From 1907 to 1914 he studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg.
In 1892, Ivan Vasilyevich worked as an accounting assistant at sugar factory in the village of Ramon (Voronezh District, Voronezh Governorate), then he lived with his uncle in the town of Lomza (Kingdom of Poland).
After moving to Moscow (1898), he visited the studios of V. Fisher, I. I. Mashkov, F.I. Rerberg (1898-1908), where he met Kazimir Severinovich Malevich (1907). He joined the avant-garde movement. He was one of the founders of the "Moscow Salon", member of the group of artists "Supremus" that was led by Kazimir Severinovich Malevich (1916).
Ivan Vasilyevich participated in exhibitions of the group of artists "Soyuz Molodyozhi" (Union of Youth) (1910), "Tramvai V" (1915), "0,10" (1915-1916), "Magazin" (1916), "Bubnovy valet" (1916). He worked in almost every direction of modern and early avant-garde: "Portrait of Malevich" (1912), "Gramophone" (1914), "Non-objective Painting According to the Principle of Light-Color" (1921), created a new type of works - prefabricated structures made of wood, metal, glass ("Landscape Rushing By", 1915).
In the 1920s he carried out organizational activities, contributed to the work of Department of Visual Arts of the People’s Commissariat of Education, the Higher State Art-Technical Studios and Russian Academy of Arts. He was a member of the society "Four Arts". In the 1930s, he moved to figurative painting. After exclusion from cooperative "Vsekohudozhnik", he filled small orders.
