Ivan Yakovlevich studied at schools of Old Kurlak village in 1930-1934, in Voronezh on Monastyrshchenka in 1934-1935, in Georgievsk, Stavropol Territory in 1935-1937. He graduated from the Krasnodar Art School in 1949, Moscow Polygraphic Institute (now Moscow State University of Printing Arts) in 1955.
Konovalov Ivan Yakovlevich was a lecturer of the Kursk Artistic-Graphic Pedagogical School in 1949-1955, since 1955, in Krasnodar Art School. Since 1951, he was a participant of regional, republican, all-Union, international exhibitions.
He worked in the field of posters, book illustrations. The author of a series of easel landscapes: "Far in the North" (1973, gouache), "Over Kuban" (1975, linocut), "Anxious time" (1985, watercolor), pictorial ("Trench dreams", "Winners", 1995) and graphic ("Kursk arc", 1995, gouache) compositions on the Great Patriotic War theme.
There were personal exhibitions of Konovalov works in Krasnodar (1963, 1977). Author of 8 books of poems published in Krasnodar, including "Sparks in the wind" (1966), "Silver Bells" (1967), "Winners" (2005).
