Mitrofan Semenovich Fedorov was born on May 18, 1870, in Sitnikovo, Voronezh Oblast', Russian Federation.
Mitrofan Semenovich began to engage in art in Voronezh with Lev Grigorievich Solovyov in 1889, with whom he did not break off relations for many years. He graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied under Ilya Repin (painting) and Vasily Mate (wood engraving and copper engraving). Trained in Italy and Germany.
For 3 years Mitrofan Semenovich worked as a teacher in the village of Rovenka, Ostrogozhsky district, Voronezh oblast', Russian Federation. One of the organizers and lecturer (1902-1913) of the Kharkov Art College; creator of the Kharkov Artists Partnership (1906).
Mitrofan Semenovich taught at the Kharkov Art College (1921-1924) and the Art Institute (1925-1934); Since 1934 was a lecturer at the All-Russian Academy of Arts (1934-1937).
