Iwaji Ikeda was born in Niigata Prefecture, the son of Sakubc Ikeda and belonging to a much respected family of ancient lineage.
He graduated from Tokyo University (1899).
He was appointed professor at Hiroshima Higher Normal School (1903) and was sent to England and America for further studies (1909). Returning home was appointed professor at Kyoto University and at the same time was placed in charge of the Marine Biological Research Institute, at Seto Tanabe Bay, Wakayama Prefecture (1919).
