It introduces to the general readers the essential biology of 41 animal phyla ranging from unicellular protozoans through a great assortment of invertebrates finally to the vertebrates, including the mysterious Monoblastozoa. Aspects of the morphology, ecology, food and feeding behavior, developmental biology, life history, biogeography, evolution, and other important biological features are described for each phylum, along with an estimate of the number of extant species. A special column on taxonomy is included, and also an Appendix summarizing many biological features of the phyla.

Kubota was born on November 17, 1952 in Matsuyama, Ehime, Japan; the son of Hiroshi and Kumiko Kubota.
Kubota earned his Doctor of Science degree from Hokkaido University in 1981.
Kubota began his career as an assistant professor at Hokkaido University in 1982. Seven years later he took a position of a lecturer at the same university. Since 1992 he has been an associate professor of Department of Biological Sciences at Kyoto University.
