John Barbarese was born on 18 May 1948 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He is the son of Joseph Anthony and Antionette Danibale Barbarese.
Joseph Barbarese attended Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, United States, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree before attending Temple University in the same city in 1976. There he was able to receive a Master of Arts degree in 1981 and later his doctorate in 1994.
In 1984 Joseph started his career at Friends Select School as an English teacher and department head a taught writing before moving to Rutgers University in 1997. As of 2007, he had written four books of poetry: Under the Blue Moon (1985), New Science (1989), A Very Small World (2005), and The Black Beach (2005), the collection in which “Walk Your Body Down” is found. Black Beach won Barbarese the Vassar Miller Prize.
In addition to his poetry, Barbarese also wrote short stories, essays, and literary reviews, which appeared in various magazines, including The Atlantic, Story Quarterly, Journal of Modern Literature, New York Times, and Georgia Review. Barbarese also translated Euripides’s plays, which appeared in Euripides 4, Ion, Children of Heracles, The Madness of Heracles, Iphigenia in Tauris, Orestes (1999).
Joseph Barbarese currently is a member of Associated Writing Programs.
Joseph has married Karen Irma Henly on June 7, 1980. They have two sons and one daughter in their family: Niccolo, Joseph and Julianna Barbarese.
