Thomas Jacob "Jack" Black (born August 28, 1969) is an American comedian, actor, and musician. He makes up one half of the comedy and satirical rock duo Tenacious D. The group has four albums as well as a television series and a film.
Background
Ethnicity:
Jack's paternal grandfather, Thomas Walter Black, had English, Scottish, and Scots-Irish, Northern Irish ancestry, partly by way of Canada, and Jack's paternal grandmother, Gladys Rose Zachman, was from an ethnic German family that lived in Romania and Ukraine. Jack's maternal grandparents, Morris Cohen and Sarah Roisman, were Russian Jewish immigrants.
Black was born in Santa Monica, California, the son of two satellite engineers, Judith (Cohen) Love, who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope, and Thomas William Black. His mother is Jewish and his father converted to Judaism (Black attended Hebrew school). On The Tonight Show, he said his surname may have come from the occupational name Blacksmith. Black's parents divorced when he was 10. Then Black moved to Culver City with his father and frequently visited his mother’s home.
Education
When Jack Black entered high school, his parents enrolled him at the Poseidon School, a private secondary school engineered specifically for students struggling in the traditional school system. Black also attended Crossroads High School for Arts and Sciences where he excelled in drama.
A native of Santa Monica, California, Black attended the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) but dropped out during his sophomore year to pursue a career in entertainment, at which point his father discontinued his financial support. While at UCLA (the University of California, Los Angeles), he was a member of Tim Robbins's acting troupe and it was through this collaboration that led to his 1992 film debut in Bob Roberts (1992).
As a child, Black appeared in a commercial for the Activision game Pitfall! in 1982, which was later shown during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live and again on The Tonight Show with Conan O' Brien. Fellow UCLA alumnus Tim Robbins later cast Black in Bob Roberts (1992). He also had recurring roles on the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show (1995-1998).
While still studying at the University Jack Black became a member of Tim Robbins' Actors Gang, a Los Angeles-based performance troupe that also spawned John Cusack. Black would make his film debut with Robbins and later play opposite Cusack in a highly memorable role (Bob Roberts, 1992). He got his professional start on the stage, appearing in Tim Robbins' production of Carnage at the 1989 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Black's acting career began with primetime TV roles and then with small roles in the 1990s films such as The Fall Guy (1884), Our Shining Moment (1991), Bob Roberts (1992), Waterworld (1995), Dead Man Walking (1995), The Cable Guy (1996), Mars Attacks! (1996), The Jackal (1997), Enemy of the State (1998) and Cradle Will Rock (1999). But it was in more independently oriented projects that Black's talents were given free rein. His brief turn in HBO's Mr. Show (1995-1998) and his critically acclaimed performance as a pill-popping hospital attendant in Jesus' Son (1999) bolstered his reputation as a comic force.
Black's breakthrough came with High Fidelity (2000). Jack had one of his most recognizable and enthusiastically received screen roles to date. High Fidelity (2000) is Stephen Frears' popular adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel of the same name, it featured Black as Barry, a thoroughly obnoxious record-store employee. Although only a member of the supporting cast, Black's performance was one of the most memorable attributes of a film that was a critical success. The part allowed the actor to do some of his own singing, a talent that he had previously inflicted on numerous audience members during his years with the Tenacious D. The band, comprised of Black and fellow holy terror Kyle Gass, had existed since 1994.
It was only a matter of time before Black stepped up from supporting character to leading man. By the 2000s, Jack was cast in lead roles in comedy films such as Shallow Hal (2001), co-starred alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Jason Alexander in what promised to be a charmingly offensive addition to the Farrelly canon. Though MTV Films' heavily marketed Orange County (2002) was not a huge commercial success, Black's supporting role as the lead character's slacker brother was well received by critics and long-time fans alike, and the once-obscure figure began appearing on media outlets including Saturday Night Live, Primetime Glick, commercials for The Osbournes, and various MTV music and film awards.
In 2003, Black starred in his first big hit - director Richard Linklater's musical comedy School of Rock (2003), which featured Black as a disgruntled heavy metal-guitarist doing a substitute teaching gig for extra cash. Critics were so taken by his performance that he was honored with a Golden Globe nomination. 2004 saw Black turn in a cameo in the Will Ferrell vehicle Anchorman (2004), after starring opposite Ben Stiller in director Barry Levinson's black comedy Envy (2004). While the film was a box-office bomb after having its release pushed back several times, Black still had much to celebrate when it was announced he would be taking the lead in Peter Jackson's highly anticipated 2005 remake of King Kong (2005). The epic film helped transition Black from a cult hero to a traditional movie star, though he was still careful to keep his original fans happy. In 2006, he starred in Jared Hess' comedy Nacho Libre (2006) and The Holiday (2006).
On May 14, 2008, Black let the news slip that co-star Angelina Jolie was pregnant with twins during a joint interview at the Cannes Film Festival in France to promote their animated movie Kung Fu Panda.
Later that summer, Black appeared in Tropic Thunder (2008) with Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. Then in 2009 he starred in the comedy Year One (2009) with Michael Cera. Black's other notable films from this period include Gulliver's Travels (2010), Richard Linklater's Bernie (2011), The Muppets (2011), and Sex Tape (2014).
After appearing in a number of TV series, Black once again returned to the big screen in Goosebumps (2015), an adaptation of a popular children's series by R.L. Stine that finds the horror writer's creatures unleashed upon a neighborhood.
Jack enjoyed a prominent role in the blockbuster adventure comedy hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), costarring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. The film would go on to earn over $962 million in worldwide ticket sales. He followed in 2018 with the comedy-drama Don't Worry (2018), He Won't Get Far on Foot (2018), based on John Callahan's memoir, as well as the fantasy film The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018), an adaptation of John Bellairs' 1973 novel, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019).
He also provided the voice of Eddie Rigs in the video game Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie (2005); as well as Brütal Legend (2009), The Art of Broken Age (2014), Goosebumps: Night of Scares (2015).
In 1994, Black teamed up with friend and fellow actor Kyle Gass to form the aforementioned Tenacious D, a tongue-in-cheek musical ensemble lovingly, if sarcastically, dubbed the "Greatest Band on Earth." The duo landed an HBO series in the late 1990s, before releasing their self-titled debut album - featuring Dave Grohl on drums in 2001.
Their second album, The Pick of Destiny (2006), served as the soundtrack to their own film that fizzled at the box office, but they rediscovered their mojo for their third album Rize of the Fenix (2012), which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. In 2015, Tenacious D won a Best Metal Performance Grammy, for their cover of Dio's "The Last in Line."
Black and Gass went on to create the animated series Tenacious D in Post-Apocalypto, its songs eventually surfacing on the group's 2018 album Post-Apocalypto.
Jack Black is a member of the so-called Frat Pack, a group of comedians who have appeared together in several Hollywood films which includes Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, and Vince Vaughn.
Jack Black has worked with the Red Nose Foundation. He also supported My Friend's Place charity organization and was its host at the 30th Anniversary Gala in Los Angeles.
Quotations:
"I'd just like to be in films that I would like to see. I think of myself as an entertainment arsenal. Like I have my acting bazooka and my music machete. And you don't know what I'm going to come at you with."
"Never for a second did I think of myself as the sexiest guy in the world. When I was a kid, I thought I was the strongest man in the world. Then the fastest runner and then the smartest person in the world. One by one, my delusions got shut down. Now I just see myself as the lamest guy in the world."
"I'm hungry for rock 24/7."
"I'd rather be the king of kids, than the prince of fools."
"If Beethoven and Bach hooked up with Mozart and made a band, they COULD be a distant runner up to The D."
"I had to show some darker sides of myself than I have in roles past. It was challenging. I was most worried about the crying scenes and the nudity. But I sucked it up and went to those places because I just had to look over at Jennifer Jason Leigh who was so fearless in her performance." - About Margot at the Wedding (2007).
"When I was ten years old, I fell in love with The Who. I saw the film Tommy (1975) on cable television and despite Jack Nicholson's heinous rendition of "Go to the Mirror!", I was deeply moved by the music and the story. I wasn't deaf, dumb, or blind but I could relate to Tommy. I too wanted to be seen, felt and healed. Seriously, not going for the laugh [directed to audience]. I had a supportive family but growing up can be tough no matter what your upbringing. And no other band had the courage or sensitivity to write those kinds of emotionally raw songs. Achingly beautiful melodies touched by the hand of God. Or the devil. Or both. Or neither. I must say neither. Just a collection of ass-kicking songs, the likes of which will never be seen again! On the battlefield of rock, they went toe to toe with the likes of Hendrix and emerged unscathed. Triumphant dragon-slayers of emotionality. And about now they're probably wondering why I was chosen to give this speech. Surely there was someone more qualified. "Why is this moron talking about dragons and emotions?! Who does he think he is?" Who? I'm just one of the millions. Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend. Thank you for blowing our minds and touching our hearts."
