Jacobus attended school at St George’s Prep School, Port Elizabeth and St. Andrews College in Grahamstown. He studied at Loughborough Engineering College (nowadays Loughborough University).
In 1952, he received a Master of Science degree from Cambridge University. Also in 1964, Jacobus earned his Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of South Africa. In 1970, he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university.
Jacobus began his career as a research officer at Council for Scientific and Industrial Research of the Construction Research Institute in 1956 and had held it for six years. Then he continued his research in Core Composition as a nuclear physicist. In 1974, de Wet became a chief engineer at the Department of Water Affairs, where he served until 1977.
Then he returned to the family farm, Mount Marlow, where he lived and worked until 1989 when he handed control of the farm over to his son. In 1989, Jacobus moved to Plettenberg Bay where he was engaged in research. In addition, he regularly published scientific papers in well-known magazines such as "International Journal of Theoretical Physics" and others.
Jacobus ran in the election of the Eastern Cape Legislature in 1994. He was an English-speaking candidate representing the Vryheidsfront Party.
Jacobus is a member of South African Institute of Civil Engineers, New York Academy of Sciences and South African Institute of Physics.
On January 6, 1960 Jacobus de Wet married Eleanora Anne Charlewood, with whom he divorced in 1976. They have four children. On March 19, 1976 he married Priscilla Anne van Reenen.
