Educated Horner’s Military Academy, Oxford, North Carolina, and under private tutors. Studied at National Academy Design, Art Students’ League, Chase School, all of New York City.
Portrait painter. Sent to Roanoke Island by North Carolina History Commission, 1907, to paint settings along the coast of North Carolina, for Jamestown Exposition. Became interested in the Jugtown community and found the people to be descendants of the English Staffordshire potters. Has renounced his profession as a portrait painter to train the younger members of the community in pottery, and organize a folk-craft centre.
