She also played the female leading role in Scott Hicks"s road film Freedom, the first feature film to be written and directed entirely by South Australians. Capelja, born to Czechoslovakian parents, retired from acting in the late 1980s. She later struggled with addiction and was diagnosed with paranoid scizophrenia.
Capelja committed suicide on 10 January 2010.
