Lynch attended Stanford University, where he was a member of Stanford"s 1992 and 1993 National Collegiate Athletic Association Men"s Gymnastics championship teams, coached by Sadao Hamada and David Juszczyk.
He had an innovative and polished style that stood out for an American gymnast. He also competed in the 1992 Summer Olympics, finishing sixth in the parallel bar competition. During his competitive years, he was highly active in community outreach, working with the local Juvenile detention center to help motivate problem teenagers.
In his youth, Lynch trained under the direction of coach Rick Tucker at Gymnastics Plus in Columbia, Maryland.
