Jake Gyllenhaal is an American actor and film producer. Jake Gyllenhaal worked as a child actor in films like City Slickers and A Dangerous Woman before starring in the indie classic Donnie Darko in 2001. Gyllenhaal is best known for his role as Jack Twist in the epic romantic drama Brokeback Mountain which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Background
Ethnicity:
Jake Gyllenhaal's father has English, Swedish, Swiss-German, German, Scottish, and distant Welsh and French, ancestry. Jake's mother's family is Jewish (from Poland and Latvia).
Jake Gyllenhaal was born on December 19, 1980, in Los Angeles, California, United States, to producer/screenwriter Naomi Foner (née Achs) and director Stephen Gyllenhaal. He is the brother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, who played his sister in Donnie Darko (2001). His godmother is actress Jamie Lee Curtis.
Education
Jake Gyllenhaal studied at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles from where he graduated in 1998. He went to Columbia University to study Eastern religions and philosophy but dropped out after two years to focus on his acting career.
When Gyllenhaal was a teenager, his parents insisted that he takes on summer jobs to support himself. Not that they dint have the money, they wanted to encourage his artistic expression. He worked as a lifeguard and as a busboy at a family friend’s restaurant. As a lifeguard, one time he had to save someone who was stung by a jellyfish by peeing on his leg to counteract the sting.
Gyllenhaal's parents were very protective of him; probably they did not want him missing his childhood. He was allowed to audition for roles but forbidden from taking them if he was chosen. One specific incident is when he got a part in the 1992 film The Mighty Ducks but because he had to leave home for two months, his parents did not allow him to take the role. As a child, he did not have permission to appear in his father’s films either.
Gyllenhaal’s debut on-screen performance was in City Slickers, working alongside stars such as Billy Crystal, who plays his dad in the film. He made an impact in various films in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In his first leading role in October Sky in 1999, he played Homer Hickam, a coal miner’s son who becomes a NASA engineer through his sheer perseverance and hard work. The film was a big hit and his role was hailed as his breakout performance.
Bypassed for the Ewan McGregor role in Moulin Rouge, he took the lead in a small, science-fiction/fantasy movie called Donnie Darko, which was released in the fall of 2001. The odd movie, directed by Richard Kelly, featured Gyllenhaal as a young high-schooler plagued by visions of a giant talking rabbit named Frank, who urges him to commit violent acts and warns that the world will end in four weeks. Drew Barrymore played a sympathetic high-school teacher to Gyllenhaal's character, whom others are convinced is displaying signs of schizophrenia. The film won terrific reviews, but tanked at the box office, earning just $515,000.
Gyllenhaal went on to appear in another box-office dud in 2001, Bubble Boy, with this one, by contrast, receiving scathing reviews. Several of the roles that followed echoed former projects in complexity: Gyllenhaal played Jennifer Aniston's troubled love interest in The Good Girl (2002), while in Moonlight Mile (2002), the actor portrayed a young man grieving over the death of his fiancee along with her family. In spring 2002, Gyllenhaal also starred on the London stage in Kenneth Lonergan's revival of This Is Our Youth. The actor received an Evening Standard Theater Award for his portrayal.
In 2004 he played Sam Hall in the science fiction disaster film, The Day After Tomorrow in which the catastrophic effects of global warming are shown in a series of extreme weather events. He was portraying a student caught in a cataclysmic climate event, opposite Dennis Quaid. The movie was a big commercial success.
The year 2005 too was great for his career. Making his theater debut, Gyllenhaal appeared on the London stage with a starring role in Kenneth Lonergan's revival of This Is Our Youth. The play was widely-received and played for eight weeks in London's West End. Gyllenhaal followed his successful theater en devour with a role in Jarhead (2005), playing Anthony "Swoff" Swofford, an aggressive and masculine but equally vulnerable and sensitive Marine during the Gulf War, and Proof (2005), as Gwyneth Paltrow's love interest.
However, it was his follow-up performance that won critical acclaim in Brokeback Mountain. He portrayed Jack Twist, a man who develops a complex romantic and sexual relationship with another man in the epic romance. Co-starring Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, and Anne Hathaway, the film earned Gyllenhaal a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination in addition to winning him the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
He appeared in two other successful movies in 2005. He played Andrew in the biographical drama war film Jarhead which also starred Jamie Foxx and Chris Cooper. He appeared as Harold Dobbs in the drama film Proof along with Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow. In 2007 he played the crime reporter Robert Graysmith in the mystery thriller Zodiac which was based on the manhunt for the notorious serial killer known as Zodiac who had killed several people around the San Francisco Bay Area.
He acted in the 2009 thriller film Brothers which also had Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman in the main cast. The film was inspired by Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey and took place in Afghanistan and Denmark. In the romantic comedy Love & Other Drugs (2010), he teamed up with Anne Hathaway with whom he had previously acted in Brokeback Mountain. The film was based on the on-fiction book, Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy.
The thriller Source Code followed in 2011. Gyllenhaal then starred as a police officer in End of Watch (2012), shot in gonzo-camera style, and as a detective in the shadowy drama Prisoners (2013), co-starring Hugh Jackman, Maria Bello, Viola Davis, and Terrence Howard. In fall 2014, Gyllenhaal once again earned buzz for his role in Nightcrawler, a stark drama in which he played an on-the-precipice cameraman looking to become successful via harrowing crime footage. Gyllenhaal earned his second Golden Globe acting nod for the part along with BAFTA and SAG Awards nominations.
Film projects for 2015 included the romantic comedy Accidental Love, the boxing drama Southpaw, the biopic adventure Everest - based on the 1996 disaster on Mount Everest - and the drama Demolition. In 2016 he starred in Tom Ford's psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals, opposite Amy Adams.
In January 2015, Gyllenhaal made his Broadway debut in Constellations opposite actress Ruth Wilson, a play which fused ideas around cosmology and relationships. In 2017, he returned to Broadway playing French artist Georges Seurat in a revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's musical Sunday in the Park with George.
Back on the big screen, Gyllenhaal starred in Stronger (2017), based on the memoir of a victim of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing, and featured prominently in the comedy western The Sisters Brothers (2018). The following year, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Politics
Gyllenhaal shot a commercial for the Rock the Vote campaign and stopped in at the University of Southern California with his sister Maggie to inspire the students to go out and vote. Jake Gyllenhaal showed his support for lots of Democratic politicians.
Views
Starting from an early age, Gyllenhaal was interested in helping people. In this case, he donated his glasses to the group New Eyes for the Needy whenever his prescription changed - something his grandfather encouraged him to do. In an effort to support the Future Forests program, the actor spends hundreds of dollars a year to have trees planted in a forest in Mozambique.
He also does much more public service, like helping to promote climate change awareness after his film The Day After Tomorrow was released, helping the Stand Up to Cancer TV fundraiser, and donating his time to the American Civil Liberties Union, which his whole family supports as well.

Connections
In real life, Gyllenhaal is a straight man but when he gets gay roles to play on-screen, he does them so well even if they are uncomfortable. After playing Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain, rumors started circulating that he is bisexual. However, he clarified in an interview that he has never been attracted to men sexually, and does not think he would be afraid of it if it ever happened.
Gyllenhaal has dated a couple of A-listers in the past like Kirsten Dunst, Reese Witherspoon, Alyssa Miller, and Taylor Swift. However, he never got married to any of them. In 2018, Jake Gyllenhaal started dating model Jeanne Cadieu.
