Tom Holland is a British actor and dancer, who found early stardom in Billy Elliot the Musical before making his screen debut as the iconic superhero Spider-Man in 2016.
Background
Thomas Stanley Holland was born on June 1, 1996, in London, England. He was raised by his parents, Nicola Elizabeth, and Dominic Holland. While his father, Dominic, is a comedian, his mother is working as a photographer. His paternal grandparents were from the Isle of Man and Ireland, respectively. He lives with his parents and three younger brothers - Paddy and twins Sam and Harry.
Education
Tom Holland went to Donhead Preparatory School, an independent day school situated in Wimbledon, southwest London. Right from his school days, Tom exhibited a keen interest in dance and hence started attending dance classes. But he was bullied by his schoolmates for having a liking towards dance. Then, after a successful eleven plus exam, he became a pupil at Wimbledon College, a voluntary aided Jesuit Roman Catholic comprehensive school (also in Wimbledon), up until December 2012. He then attended the prestigious BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, from where he learned the nuances of acting and dancing.
During the 2006 Richmond Dance Festival, Tom was seen dancing at Nifty Feet Dance School, where he was spotted by a choreographer named Lynne Page, who was working as an assistant to the popular choreographer, Peter Darling. Looking at his dancing skills, Lynne Page somehow knew that Tom would later become a popular entertainer and hence, he took Tom under his wing.
Tom was auditioned on eight occasions and was trained for two years, after which he landed the opportunity to play Billy’s best friend Michael in Billy Elliot the Musical. With no formal training in ballet or drama, Holland failed to impress most of the talent evaluators at the audition. However, he did impress Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry, who loved Holland's natural performing ability and stage presence. Since it was his West End debut, he gained popularity as a theatre artist.
Following two years of ballet lessons, Holland debuted with the West End production in June 2008 as Billy's best friend, Michael. He soon slid into the starring role and wowed audiences with his acrobatic ability until his final performance in May 2010.
After playing an important role in Billy Elliot the Musical on June 28, 2008, Holland went on to play the titular role in the same musical on September 8, 2008. His performance was praised by the critics and Tom started gaining popularity as an actor. As a result, he started appearing in many television shows and interviews.
Tom made his television debut soon after playing the titular role in Billy Elliot the Musical. He and his co-star Tanner Pflueger were interviewed by Channel 5 for one of its news shows. In the following year, Tom was cast in the show The Feel Good Factor. At the show’s premiere, Tom performed the popular Angry Dance from the musical and was later interviewed by Myleene Klass, who had hosted the premiere.
On March 8, 2010, Tom and other actors, who had portrayed Billy Elliot, were invited to 10 Downing Street in order to mark the fifth anniversary of the famous musical. There, he got an opportunity to meet the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown. On March 31, a special fifth-anniversary show of the musical was showcased and Tom was chosen to play the lead in that particular show.
In 2011, Tom made his film debut when he lent his voice to a character named Sho in the English version of the popular Japanese animated fantasy film Arrietty. His major breakthrough came in the year 2012 when he was cast alongside actors like Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts in the critically acclaimed disaster drama film, The Impossible.
The Impossible went on to become a successful film and was played at the Toronto International Film Festival. Tom, who played Lucas Bennett in the film, was praised for his acting skills, with many saying that he could win an Oscar for his performance. Though he did not win an Oscar, he did manage to win other major awards and nominations.
In 2013, Holland appeared in a speculative drama film titled How I Live Now and was also seen in a short film titled Moments. In the following year, he lent his voice for the British-American drama film Locke, which starred Tom Hardy in the main role. He also played a cameo in the filmed version of Billy Elliot the Musical. In 2015, he played the younger version of Thomas Nickerson in the adventure-drama film, In the Heart of the Sea. In the same year, he appeared as Gregory Cromwell in the British television series, Wolf Hall.
Shortly afterward, Holland's path to global stardom was launched with the announcement that he would take over the role of Peter Parker for the latest reboot of Spider-Man. Unlike his predecessors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, who were in their mid-to-late 20s when tapped for Spidey, the 19-year-old Holland was much closer in age to Peter Parker's troubled high school student turned superhero.
In the spring of 2016, Holland made his debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Despite limited screen time, he drew strong reviews for his version of the iconic web-slinger, ensuring a clearer path forward for his contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In July 2017, Spider-Man: Homecoming was released, in which Holland reprised his role from Captain America: Civil War. Earning $117 million in box office receipts in its first weekend, Homecoming received positive reviews and Holland considerable praise, with his appearance being called "a star performance given by a born actor." The film went on the gross over $800 million worldwide. Holland reprised Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War, which was released on 27 April 2018. He has a six-picture deal with Marvel Studios, not including his Captain America: Civil War appearance.
Holland reprised his role in Avengers: Endgame. Holland began shooting for Spider-Man: Far From Home in July 2018 with production wrapping that October. The film is scheduled for a worldwide release date of July 2, 2019. The trailer was released on January 15, 2019, and was first shown at Sony's CCXP Brazil panel on December 8, 2018, with Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal, who portrays Mysterio, in attendance to promote the film.
Tom Holland has lent his voice to a couple of popular video games. In 2016, he lent his voice to a video game called Lego Marvel Avengers. He then went on to do the same in a couple of other video games titled Spider-Man: Homecoming and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.
Holland appeared in a short film titled Tweet, which he had also directed. Tom Holland aims to become a director in the near future. For now, he wants to take up challenging and unique acting roles, something which he has been doing for quite some time now.
In 2016, Holland was cast in The Modern Ocean. The project has since encountered development problems but director Shane Carruth has said the film is still in production and has not yet been canceled, with plans to begin filming in 2020. Holland was set for a supporting role alongside Keanu Reeves, Daniel Radcliffe, Anne Hathaway, and Jeff Goldblum.
Holland was cast in the film adaptation of Patrick Ness's best-selling YA series Chaos Walking as Todd Hewitt, alongside Star Wars star Daisy Ridley, which will be directed by Doug Liman. Holland revealed after filming that a sequel was in the works. In May 2017, it was announced that he had been cast as a young Nathan Drake in the film adaptation of Naughty Dog's Uncharted video game series. He is also now cast as the lead role in the film adaptation of Beneath the Scarlet Sky with Pascal Pictures. He is set to star in Blue Sky Studios' Spies in Disguise in 2019 alongside Will Smith. Holland was later cast in a voice role in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, alongside Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star Robert Downey Jr.
During the filming of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it was announced that Holland would appear in The Devil All the Time, a horror film set during the events of World War II. The film, scheduled for release in 2020, will be directed by Antonio Campos. Days later, it was also confirmed that Holland would appear in the war film 1917, a film set during the events of World War I directed by Sam Mendes. He is set to play Spider-Man again in Avengers: Endgame, scheduled for release on 26 April 2019, and the sequel to Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is scheduled for release on 5 July 2019. In December 2018, Holland signed on to the Pixar animated film Onward, alongside Avengers: Infinity War co-star Chris Pratt. In March 2019, it was confirmed that Holland was in talks to take on the lead role in Cherry, based on the novel of the same name, reteaming him with the Russo brothers.
Tom Holland received many awards and nominations for his first acting role in a film. For his excellent performance as a 12-year-old Lucas Bennett in The Impossible, he has won a total of nine prestigious awards. Some of the awards that he won for The Impossible include, Spotlight Award, Best Youth Performance, Breakthrough Performance - Male, Young British Performer of the Year, Best Male Newcomer, and Best Performance in a Feature Film.
In 2016, Holland won the Breakthrough Performance of the Year at the Golden Schmoes Awards for his performance in Captain America: Civil War. In 2017, he won the Rising Star Award at the prestigious British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). He then won Best Performance by a Younger Actor at the 2017 Saturn Awards for Captain America: Civil War. In the same year, he won Choice Summer Movie Actor at the popular Teen Choice Awards for his role in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Holland broke Tobey Maguire's record of portraying Spider-Man in a live action film after portraying the character for the fourth time in Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Quotations:
"I think the important thing is to just take in one step at a time. I think if you rush into fame, then that's where it can be really affecting, and if you take it for granted it can be really affecting."
"I'm taking every day as it comes and there's very little preparation that you can do apart from making sure you remain grounded and keep the people that are close to you close and my main goal at the moment is to make sure my work doesn't fall below a certain caliber."
"At the moment, I'm sort of developing some of my own little short film ideas, and trying to get into the directing side of things, just as an interest really, to see what it's like."
Personality
Physical Characteristics:
Holland has a height of 5 ft 8 in or 173 cm, his weight is 64 kg or 141 pounds. Holland also has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes.
Due to Holland's love for dance, gymnastics, basketball, and other recreational sports, he was always in good body shape. However, Tom worked very hard to get a heroic physique for Homecoming and even resorted to drastic measures like electrocution to meet his goals in time. He explained on Facebook Live: "I went to this gym yesterday where they strap electric belts on you and you do exercise whilst being electrocuted. It's a really strange experience, it's like a dull tingling, but I'm definitely feeling it today. I have to do 20 minutes once a week."
Holland had his nose broken twice. He broke his nose on the last day of filming The Lost City of Z (2016), and then he broke his nose for the second time during the first week of filming Chaos Walking (2020), after getting punched in the face by a stuntman.
