A Half Century of Expansion 3. Civil War and Aftermath 4. America and World Power Volumes V-VII are a continuation of Adams' work through annual records from 1933-1963: 5. The Record of 1933-1941 6. The Record of 1942-1948 7. The Record of 1949-1963 Each volume contains plentiful black-and-white illustrations, political cartoons, documents, pamphlets, etc. The final pages of each volume are devoted to picturing the theme of that particular volume, depicting many typical scenes, outstanding personalities, and some of the most conspicuous representations of our architectural imagination - a veritable panorama of American life.

James Truslow Adams was born in Brooklyn, New York, Oct. 18, 1878.
He received his A. B. at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1898, and his M. A. at Yale in 1900.
Until 1912 he was with a firm on the N. Y. Stock Exchange. During World War I, Adams was a captain in the Intelligence Division of the Army, and in 1918-1919 served with the House Commission at the Peace Conference in Paris. His Founding of New England (1921), which was critical of Puritanism, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1922. This volume was followed by two others which carried the history of New England to 1850. Adams' most popular book was The Epic of America (1931), which was translated into six languages. He served as editor-in-chief of the Dictionary of American History (5 vols. , 1940), the Atlas of American History (1943), and the Album of American History, (4 vols. , 1944 - 1948). He died at Southport, Connecticut, May 18, 1949.
