From 1972 to 1975 John Crook worked as an assistant master at Eton College in Eton, England. From 1975 to 1986 John Crook was an assistant master at the Pilgrims’ School in Winchester, England. In 1985 John Crook worked as an independent architectural historian, lecturer, and photographer. In 1990 John Crook became a dean and chapter of Winchester. In 1990 John Crook was an archaeological consultant. In 1997 John Crook was an honorary research fellow at the University of Reading. In 2000 John Crook worked as an archaeological consultant at Saint Cross Hospital.

John Crook was a contributor of more than forty articles to various books and periodicals, including The Blackwell Encyclopaedia of Anglo-Saxon England, edited by M. Lapidge, J. Blair, S. Keynes, and D.
