This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

( About the Book The Americas were settled by people migr...)
About the Book The Americas were settled by people migrating from Asia at the height of an Ice Age 15,000 years ago. There was no contact with Europeans until Vikings appeared briefly in the 10th century, and the voyages of Christopher Columbus from 1492. America's Indigenous peoples were the Paleo-Indians, who were initially hunter-gatherers. Post 1492, Spanish, Portuguese and later English, French and Dutch colonialists arrived, conquering and settling the discovered lands over three centuries, from the early 16th to the early 19th centuries. The United States achieved independence from England in 1776, while Brazil and the larger Hispanic American nations declared independence in the 19th century. Canada became a federal dominion in 1867. About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. (Excerpt from The Gospel of Saint John in West-Saxon: Edit...)
Excerpt from The Gospel of Saint John in West-Saxon: Edited From the Manuscripts, With Introduction, and Notes AN clo-saxon literature precedes by centuries of years the layman's possession Of vernacular Scripture. But no literature of so much excellence and extending over so long a period of national life surpasses that of the Anglo Saxons in its dependence upon Scripture, liturgy, and hagiography. Learning and literary authorship were then almost exclusively ecclesiastical. That there was something - we cannot know how much in these con ditions that must at times have brought the scholar near to a conception of the desirability of supplying the people with Scripture in the native tongue is attested by the ac count Of Bede's endeavor to translate the Gospel of St. John, by surviving texts glossed in the vernacular, by a notable translation of the Psalms, by elfric' s translations of other portions of the Old Testament, and especially by the west-saxon Gospels.1 On the other hand, a knowledge of the conditions of popular education must have arrested such speculation, and relegated the possible use of vernacular Scripture to an exclusive clergy. James Wilson Bright was born on October 2, 1852 at Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Samuel and Eve Margaret Bright. Samuel Bright died when James was very young, leaving his widow and children in rather straitened circumstances.
Nevertheless, James went to college, graduating in 1877 from Lafayette, where he had studied under Prof. Francis A. March who was then, next to Child, the best Anglicist in America. His interest in philology aroused, he did graduate work at the Johns Hopkins University, where he was a Fellow in 1880-82. There he studied English, Old Saxon, and Icelandic under Cook and Wood, German and Gothic under Brandt, and Sanskrit under Lanman; and was granted the degree of Ph. D. in 1882.
After receiving a Ph. D. degree in 1882 James Bright was appointed assistant in German and during the year 1882-83 the English and German departments, which logically belong together, were combined, Bright giving courses in Old High German and in the German classical authors.
In 1883-84 Bright went to Germany and studied three semesters under Sievers, Paul, and Ten Brink. He returned to America in the latter year, eager to establish a seminary with training such as he had himself secured in Germany.
He was made Fellow by courtesy (1884 - 85) and substituted for Professor Corson at Cornell during January and February 1885. From March to May he lectured at Johns Hopkins on historical English grammar, and won for himself an instructorship in English. The English department now established its independence and quickly became a center of research in English philology.
He became professor in 1893 and was Caroline Donovan Professor of English Literature from 1905 to 1925, when he retired as professor emeritus.
He was also an editor of Hesperia, a member of the advisory board of Modern Philology, a member of the editorial committee of the Modern Language Association (1904 - 14), and editor-in-chief of the Albion Series of Anglo-Saxon and Middle English Poetry. He was author and editor of an Anglo-Saxon Reader, and Outlines of Anglo-Saxon Grammar (1891); Gospel of St. Luke in Anglo-Saxon (1893); St. Matthew in West-Saxon (1904); St. John in West-Saxon (1904); St. Mark in West-Saxon (1905); St. Luke in West-Saxon (1906).
He was joint author of West-Saxon Psalms (1907), and Elements of English Versification (1910). He was also a contributor of scholarly articles and reviews in the field of English to many philological journals.
Coming of Pennsylvania German stock he was always thrifty, serious, and studious, and managed to amass a fortune of more than $160, 000 which he left to his relatives, selling most of his books to Goucher College.
Bright was one of the pioneers of graduate work in America. He was also one of the original board of editors of Modern Language Notes (1886 - 1915), and was editor-in-chief 1916-25. A member of many learned societies, he was secretary for America of the Early English Text Society and of the Chaucer Society, secretary (1893 - 1901) and president (1902 - 03) of the Modern Language Association, and a vice-president of the Simplified Spelling Society of London. In addition to his own contributions and his editorial work he trained fifty-five doctors of philosophy in English, most of whom hold important professorships to-day in all parts of America. Bright won the Fowler Prize in 1876 for the study of American poet William Cullen Bryant, and during commencement was awarded the prize by Bryant himself at the graduation ceremony. Bright will always be remembered as the founder of a new scientific era in English philology, one who established a new standard in the study of English. His publications in the field of Anglo-Saxon and of the West-Saxon Gospels are models of exact research and of severe scholarship.

Bright gave much of his time to shaping its ideals and to bringing the contributions to a high standard of scholarship. He also gave his students a sound philological training and was a master of scientific method.
He was himself a hard taskmaster and a tireless worker. He lived all his life as a graduate student.
Quotations: In a letter sent to Daniel Coit Gilman, first president of Johns Hopkins, Bright claims, "When I began giving instruction here in 1886, the idea of a university course in English was wholly undeveloped. My lectures in English language . . . represent the first attempt in America to teach the subject in a scientific way . . . with [the] direct aim at higher academic discipline. "
He was a member of the America of the Early English Text Society and of the Chaucer Society, of the Modern Language Association, and of the Simplified Spelling Society of London. He belonged to the University Club of Baltimore but was a member of few social clubs, though he was in demand in social circles.
He had an attractive personality, --a man of average height and build with bright gray eyes and light brown hair and mustache.
He never married.
