James entered the office of William A. Potter, prominent architect during the latter years of the nineteenth century, under whom he completed professional training. After establishing his own office in the city, Mr. Brown was commissioned to design several important buildings, of which the Appelate Division of the Supreme Court was his outstanding achievement. The structure, erected at the corner of Madison Avenue and 24th Street, received wide and favorable comment after its completion in 1900. Among his other works were the two Delmonico hotels and restaurants, Carnegie Library on East 75th Street, the Babies Hospital, and a number of fine residences.
