Clemens was elected a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 1987 "for contributions to the field of metal–oxide–semiconductor fundamental device physics and its application to the development of Very-large-scale integration integrated circuit technology". He was the 1999 recipient of the J J Ebers Award "for fundamental contributions to metal–oxide–semiconductor Very-large-scale integration electron devices".
