Collins’ method is to make an internal textual study of Spinoza’s doctrine on nature with emphasis on his general model of nature that underlies and governs his arguments on particular issues. Separate chapters are devoted to each of his early writings. Two chapters discuss the Ethics. Collins was born on July 12, 1917 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, United States; the son of Michael Joseph and Mary Magdalen (Rooney) Collins.
James received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1941 and a Master of Arts degree in 1942 from the Catholic University of America. Two years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university.
Collins began his career as a research fellow at Harvard University in 1944. A year later James became a member of faculty at Saint Louis University and held it until 1985. He also served as a professor of philosophy at the same university from 1956 to 1985.

On June 6, 1945 James Collins married Yvonne Marie Stafford. They had a son.
