Studied at Braemar School. Glasgow University. Master of Arts, After some training in Forestry at Edinburgh, was six years Wood Forester at Invercauld, Abordeenshiro. Having gone through some desultory private study, went to Glasgow in 1879.
Attended Arts classes, and was some time a medical student, but relinquished latter course owing to pecuniary hindrances. Master of Arts.
Entered service of Glasgow University, 1884. Secretary of local examinations from 1889 till discontinuance of examinations in 1893. Registrar of the University, 1886-1905.
Assistant to Clerk of Senate, 1884- 1905. Quitted employment oi University and betook himself to journalism, 5. Sometime editor and chief proprietor of Peterhead Sentinel.
