James Fendrich studied at Seattle University and became a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. Then he decided to continue his studying and graduated from University of Notre Dame with Master of Arts degree in 1962. Finally he received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1965 from Michigan State University.
James Fendrich started his career from the position of assistant professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida in 1965. He has held there till 1968, then he received a post of associate professor in 1968 till 1974. Afterwards he worked there as a professor of sociology during the years 1974-1994.
Also, James worked for U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Veterans Administration, U.S. Army Behavioral and Social Science, and Sociological Resources for Secondary Schools.
