James Hajicek earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1970 from Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design (now The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI)), Missouri, and a Master of Fine Arts in 1978 from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque.
An assistant professor of art (since 1979) at Arizona State University, Tempe, James Hajicek has taught there since 1976 and been managing editor of the school's Northlight magazine since 1976.
Recipient of a faculty grant-in-aid to research the woodburytype printing process in England, James Hajicek won an NEA Photographer's Fellowship in 1979, an Arizona Commission on the Arts and Humanities organizational grant for Northlight Gallery in 1978 and a Ford Foundation Fellowship at the University of New Mexico in 1976.
