James was a blacksmith's apprentice. He also studied sculpture himself.
In 1971 and 1972, Licini went for study trips to the United States and later to Spain and Mexico.
Since 1955 to 1959, Licini worked as an ironmonger and locksmith. Beginning from the 1960s, James served as an assistant of Hans Aeschbacher and Kurt Laurenz Metzler.
James Licini mainly works with double-T beams, angle iron and steel plates, which he obtains directly from industrial production. In 1968, he created his first abstract iron sculpture.
In 1997, he exhibited at the Forum Kunst in Rottweil and the following year at the Galerie Andy Jllien in Zurich.
In 2017, his works were shown in park Castello del Sole.
Currently, James works in Nürensdorf.
During a short period of time, from 1961 to 1963, Licini was married to the photographer Maja Burkhard.
