(This book uses leading poststructuralist thinkers to expo...)
This book uses leading poststructuralist thinkers to expose the mechanisms that the American public school employs to form subjectivity. Political issues that inform pedagogy such as cultural pluralism, the Deweyan legacy, and feminist classroom strategies are read applying constructs taken from philosophers such as Barthes, Derrida, Foucault, and Kristeva. Using Saussure’s linguistic theory as a starting point, this book moves from a description of the lived body and myth to deconstruction and sexual bliss, producing a multilayered set of reading strategies.

James Palermo was born on August 30, 1937, in Buffalo, New York, United States. He is the son of Nicholas and Kathryn (Yovano) Palermo.
James Palermo began his studies at Canisius College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1960 and a Master of Science in Education degree in 1965. Later he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1973.
James Palermo, straight after receiving a bachelor's degree, did his military service at the United States Marine Corps in 1960-1961. Later on, in 1968, he became a professor of educational foundations at Buffalo State College.
In addition to his teaching, he also published the book, Poststructuralist Readings of the Pedagogical Encounter, in 2002. The book looks at the relevance of French thought and the way it might be brought into the reading experiences of school. It thus goes some way towards offering different strategies for the construction of human subjectivity, and in setting about this task, Palermo tries to show the way different philosophical perspectives yield different ways of reading different works and ultimately shaping different sorts of pedagogical encounters. The chapters cover thinkers like Saussure, Barthes, Lacan, Althusser, Derrida, and Irigaray.
James Palermo is an outstanding educator as well as a gifted author. For the success in his career, he was honored with the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence in 1991, the President's Award for Excellence from Buffalo State College in 2002, and the James and Helen Merritt Distinguished Service Award from Northern Illinois University in 2002.

2002James Palermo seeks to understand and apply philosophical constructs to critique pedagogy. After reading a primary philosophical source, he asks how keywords can be used to uncover the social/self formative process of the school. Phenomenological, poststructuralist, and Marxist philosophers had the most influence on his work. His original inspiration came out of a perceived lack of understanding. For example, reading Camus's The Stronger and viewing Bunel's Discreet Charm both produced an alienation effect which energized his research direction.
James Palermo is a member of the Philosophy of Education Society and the American Educational Studies Association.
James Palermo married Marjorie Cannizzaro on August 10, 1963. The marriage produced two children: Leslie Anne and James.
