James Polese attended Mare Island Apprentice School, where he got the qualification of a journeyman machinist. Then he was a student of the University of California, studying vocational teaching credentials. He received his junior engineer license from Coast Guard officer training.
From 1935 till 1941 Mr. Polese worked at Mare Island Navy Shipyard. During the period of 1941-1945 he joined the staff of Ventura Junior College, working as a teacher. In 1945 he was appointed engineer by U.S. Maritime Service.
James Polese served as a senior mechanic at University of California between 1946 and 1951. In 1951-1955 Mr. Polese was a project engineer at Eitel McCollough. From 1955 till 1960 he held the post of project engineer at Varian Associates, and in 1961-1977 project engineer at General Electric. Mr. Polese is also known to take part in volunteer work for parks, such as bridge building and trailwork.

James Polese married Esther M. Holman (a social worker and teacher) on February 23, 1941. The couple has four children: Richard L. Polese, Lia Suzan Cook, Carolyn Polese Lehman, Katherine Louise Galvin.
