Jim Smith graduated from Cambridge University in 1976 and completed his Doctor of Philosophy at Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1979.
He held a postdoctoral position at Harvard Medical School from 1979-1981, then a postdoctoral position at Imperial Cancer Research Fund from 1981-1984. In 1984 he joined the staff of the National Institute for Medical Research, becoming head of the Division of Developmental Biology in 1991. He moved to become director of the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research United Kingdom Gurdon Institute in 2001, returning to NIMR in 2009 to become its director
In 2014 he became Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Research Council.
Jim Smith"s research has focused on how cells of the very early vertebrate embryo form the specialised tissues of muscle, skin, blood and bone.
