James Thorne Smith, Jr. was born on March 27, 1892, in Annapolis, Maryland, United States, to James Thorne Smith and Florence (Rundle) Thorne Smith. His father was a supervisor of the Port of New York during the First World War.
Smith attended Locust Dale Academy and St. Luke School. He graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Smith first dabbled in fiction writing as a Navy recruit during World War I. He wrote Biltmore Oswald and Out of Luck, which were first published on the back page of Broadside, the service newspaper. Between the two world wars, Smith produced a prodigious collection of novels that can be viewed as a reaction to the restraints of the prohibition era.
Smith employs elements of fantasy as plot aids—a magical pool appears to transform middle-aged characters into youths, statues come to life embodying libertine virtues. The best-selling Turnabout features a middle-aged suburban couple who, under the forces of a mysterious idol, swap bodies but not personalities. The “Topper” series, of which some titles have been reprinted as recently as 1981, employs a plot device where two ghosts play antics on unsuspecting mortals. However stereotypical his characters and predictable his plots, Smith wrote with wit and most of his work was very funny.
