Excerpt from The Freedom of Authority: Essays in Apologetics The use of the dialectic method will be noted. First state ments, though put dogmatically, are not final ones. Criticism follows to show their patent limitations, and thus force them into more concrete forms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Modernism in Religion I hesitated much before giving it the personal touch. I overcame this hesitation for two reasons: (1) it is largely a personal confession of a spiritual pilgrimage to a haven that is not storm tossed with doubt (2) I believe that the practical purpose of the book will thereby be best served. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(The insisting upon knowing what there is in it, even in r...)
The insisting upon knowing what there is in it, even in religion, is one of the profoundest impulses of the human spirit. Hegel tried to satisfy this demand in his Philosophie derR eligion. He endeavored to discover and state the speculative idea of religion. But with him the speculative was both vital and practical the very life of the spirit throbbing through all the tangled mass of variegated religious phenomena in the worlds history. Dr. W. T. Harris, the profoundest student of Hegel in this country, says that no other work more deserves translation into English. But any mere translation of it would need a further translation into expository paraphrase. The inadequacy of such a translation may be tested by the reader in the first few pages of Chapter VIII. I therefore offer some studies on parts of this great work, deeming them of value, both in themselves, and in introducing readers to Hegel sown (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) James was born on January 13, 1847 in Howard, Pennsylvania, United States, the son of Robert and Sarah E. (MacBride) Sterrett.
He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1867 and from the Episcopal Theological Seminary at Cambridge, Massachussets, in 1872.
In 1872 he was ordained deacon and became assistant minister at Lawrence, Massachussets. Elevated to the priesthood in 1873, he served as rector of the church in Wellsville, New York, until 1877.
His next parish was in Bedford, Pennsylvania, where he ministered from 1879 to 1882. He was then called to the Seabury Divinity School, Faribault, Minnesota, as professor of philosophy, which position he held for the ensuing ten years, at the end of which time he assumed a similar professorship at Columbian (now George Washington) University, Washington, District of Columbia. He was made professor emeritus in 1909.
From 1892 to 1911 he served also as assistant minister of the Church of the Epiphany, Washington. Becoming rector of All Soul's Parish in 1911, he continued as such until 1917, and thereafter he was associate rector. During a period of ill health he committed suicide by shooting.
James Macbride Sterrett was well-known as the author of such works as Christian apologetics, Hegel, and the British Empiricists and others. He served as the second President of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology. As the leader of a church he was devoted to the spiritual welfare of those who looked to him for guidance, a fact especially evinced in the closing years of his life, when, after retirement from teaching, he assumed the active work of the ministry and wrought devotedly and effectively. As a philosopher, Sterrett's distinctive contribution to American thought was along the line of the development of idealistic philosophy, notably the idealism of Hegel.

book
He loved philosophy as men love an ideal and consistently followed the light that it yielded. He was eager to impress others with its knowledge and to make it a living force.
Law is the expression of one's own moral self, whether this fact be consciously realized or not. Authority is real freedom; indeed, freedom is best actualized under and through authority. Thus freedom is given an ethical meaning. This was one of Sterrett's outstanding ideas and, applied to historical religion, became a plea for the episcopate, which seemed to him to be rationally justified and which he regarded as conducive to the best interests of the Church.
His ethical viewpoint was the social one. It was his conviction that man finds his truest ethical life in conjunction with other men. The freedom of authority is the philosophical justification of authority in that under law one finds the best of one's own nature.
He was a member of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology.
He was never unfair to opponents nor did he criticize them for the mere sake of criticism.
He married on January 20, 1876 to Adlumia Dent of Brookland, Pennsylvania.
