James E. Taze first developed an interest in thoroughbred racing at age five when his grandmother took him to Pimlico. Racing remained a hobby while he pursued a career as a financial analyst and statistician. He worked on National Aeronautics and Space Administration contracts at Jet Propulsion Laboratory during the daytime while he ran statistics and wrote a column for Research and Rating Report after hours. When he realized that many of the approaches applied in the financial field worked with racing, he left the corporate world in 1985 to devote full time to statistical data and analysis for thoroughbred racing.
