James R. Webb

Background

James R. Webb was born in 1825 in Chelsea, London, United Kingdom into artistic family. His father Archibald Webb and his brother Byron Webb were noted painters.

Education

He was a pupil of Clarkson Frederic Stanfield.

Career

He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy and the British Institute between 1850 and 1888, and many of his works still hang in London in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Gallery. Other works are found in a large number of provincial galleries.

He died in Chelsea, London in 1895.

Achievements

• James was a brilliant painter famous for his unique style. His the most noted works were The Lock (1857), A Barge in a Norfolk Landscape (1859), On a choppy sea (1865), Mewstone (1869), River Landscape (1874) etc.
