James Stewart received his Bachelor of Arts from Chadron State College, Chadron, Nebraska, in 1942. He studied at the University of California at Los Angeles and Pepperdine University, Los Angeles, in 1965-1966.
A professor of vocational art at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College in California since 1964, James Stewart freelanced as a photographer and writer in Los Angeles from 1949 to 1964. From 1947 to 1949 James Stewart taught at the Fred Archer School of Photography in Los Angeles, and in 1947 taught at Southwest Photo-Arts Institute, Dallas, Texas.
James Stewart served as a photographic officer in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1947, worked as a photographer/reporter for the Omaha World-Herald in 1940-1942, and was employed by the Waldschmidt Studio in Chadron from 1935 to 1940.
James Stewart has also served as an interviewer for the Oral History Department at UCLA since 1967 and was a technical editor, columnist, and book reviewer for The Rangefinder from 1967 to 1978.
James Stewart held memberships in many organizations: the International Society of Political Psychology, the Silver Dollar Club, Book Publicists of Southern California, NPPA, and Professional Photographers of America. An executive board member of the American Federation of Teachers, he is also a past president (1968-1969) of ASMP, was chairman of the Faculty Senate at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College in 1969-1970, and was elected an Associate of RPS in 1948.
