Ricketts, James Brewerton was born on June 21, 1817 in New York City. Son of George Resident Advisor and Mary (Brewerton) Ricketts.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1839.

Career

Commissioned Second lieutenant United States Army, 1839, First lieutenant, 1846. Served at battles of Monterey and Buena Vista during Mexican War, in Seminole War in Florida, 1852. Promoted captain, 1852.

Commanded battery United States Army under General McDowell, 1861. Commissioned brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1861. Assigned to command div. in General McDowell’s Corps, 1862, fought at battles of Cedar Mountain and Manassas, in Joseph Hooker’s Corps at Battle of Antietam.

Court martial duty, 1862-1864. Joined army under General Philip Sheriden in Shenandoah Valley, at Battle of Cedar Creek, 1864. Temporarily in command VI Corps.

Discharged as brigadier general volunteers, reverted to rank major United States Army, 1866. Retired as major general, 1867.
