Visited Continental museums and worked for a time at Strasburg, 1876. Doctor of Medicine.
Professor Natural History, Aberdeen, 1878-1882. Started small marine station near Aberdeen, 1879. Member Fishery Board for Scotland, 1882.
Organising and carrying on scientific work in connection with the fisheries, 1883-1892. Studied fishery investigations in progress in the United States and Canada, 1883. In Denmark and Norway, 1885.
Swiney Lecturer on Geology, British Museum, 1907. Vice - President Royal Society, 1908. Regius Professor of Natural History, Edinburgh University, since 1882.
