Tisdall began his career as a technical staff of the speech research department at American Telephone & Telegraph Company Bell laboratories in 1984. Six years later he took a position of a system manager of human genome project at the University of Pennsylvania, where he worked until 1992.
Also James served as a computational biologist at Mercator Genetics, Inc. from 1994 to 1995. Since 1995 he has been a manager of computational biology group at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
