The firm dates from 1836 when Ben Taylor Ristine began the practice of law in Crawfordsville.
He was joined later by Theodore Ristine and sequentially, Hosea H. Ristine, Harley T. Ristine and Richard O. Ristine have followed. In 1946, upon discharge from the United States Army, Robert F. Wernle (who had practiced in downstate Illinois prior to World World War II) opened his own office in Crawfordsville.
Richard O. Ristine joined in 1948 to form Wernle & Ristine. In 1960 Richard O. Ristine was elected Lieutenant Governor and left active practice for several years.
In 1971 James East. Ayers, joined the firm.
