Deems, James Harry was born on February 4, 1848 in Baltimore. Son of General James Monroe and Mary Isabelle (Flack) Deems.

Educated Baltimore City College, and St. Timothy’s Hall, Maryland. Studied music under his father, also in Stuttgart, Wurttemberg.

Professor music, Baltimore City College, 1868-1869, Western Female High School, 1868-1878, Eastern Female High School, 1884-1901. Superintendent music, Baltimore public schools, 1868-1901.
