(When private investigator, Thomas Mahon, drops in on Poli...)
When private investigator, Thomas Mahon, drops in on Police Chief Hank James, he learns that his old army buddy is a man under siege. A serious drug problem in the resort community and the smear tactics of an ambitious sergeant have put James on the defensive. When a body turns up in the dunes of the nearby Barnegat Light State Park, James hires Mahon to identify the victim. Uncovering the victim’s identity tests Mahon’s ingenuity and leads to a second quest, identifying the woman’s secret lover. The long awaited break in the murder case finally arrives, but an island-wide drug raid threatens to send the prime suspect on his way before Mahon can prove his guilt. When the suspect vanishes into the night, a desperate dash through a violent summer storm brings Mahon to a deadly confrontation with the killer.
