James Newlin Hill was born on November 30, 1934, in Pomona, California, United States. He was a son of Mason Lowell Hill and Katharine Norris Hill (maiden name Maple).
James Newlin Hill earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College in 1957. Six years later, he obtained his Master of Arts at the University of Chicago.
In 1965, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
James Newlin Hill started his professional journey in 1957 from three-year military service in the United States Navy. Five years later, he embarked on a career as an educator at the University of California, Los Angeles, as an assistant professor of anthropology.
From 1966 to 1970, he served as an acting director of the school’s archaeological survey. By 1970, he had attained the rank of associate professor and six years later became a full professor. In addition to educational activity, Hill also took part in the administrative work of the University. So, from 1983 to 1987 and again from 1993 to 1996, he chaired its department of anthropology.
One of his books is ‘Broken Pueblo: Prehistoric Social Organization in the American Southwest’. Hill also edited ‘Explanation of Prehistoric Change’ and ‘The Individual in Prehistory’ in collaboration with Joel Gunn. Besides, the author also contributed to many journals focused on archaeology and anthropology.
