This text makes available the relatively recent developments in general equilibrium analysis - developments which until now could be found only as papers in the professional journals. It summarizes the most important results of these papers, and in so doing provides an overview of competitive equilibrium theory with respect to problems of existence and uniqueness, stability, welfare properties and comparative statics. The material has been presented so as to render it accessible to readers with minimal mathematical background without sacrificing the logical rigor inherent in the subject matter. General Equilibrium Theory and Welfare Economics... · is organized about the theme of general equilibrium, to which such topics as existence and stability of competitive equilibrium, and welfare economics easily lend themselves. · presents mathematics as it is needed, rather than relegating it to appendixes. · provides, for clarity simple, two-dimensional illustrations.

During the 1960s my main research interests were in general equilibrium theory and qualitative economics of the SamuelsonLancaster type, exploring the extent to which qualitative information combined with the competitive hypothesis of Walras’s Law and homogeneity leads to restrictive comparative status and/or stability results. I also did some work on the economics of uncertainty (the notion of first-degree stochastic dominance and the expected utility hypothesis) and production theory. In the 1970s my interests shifted to several applied areas, including the economics of professional sports, resource economics (and especially water economics), and the economic theory of the regulated firm.
My most recent work has been concerned with price patterns on commodity futures markets and in particular research into theoretical explanations for backward action in such markets.
