Jan Arnow was born in 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
She attended the Goodman School of Theater and the University of Illinois (1966-68) and completed a BFA at the School of the Art Institute (1973).
In 1967 she received a scholarship from the Experiment in International Living to go to Japan, and in 1972-73, a scholarship from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
She has given numerous lectures and workshops in photography, design and textiles, and, as of this writing, is an artist-in-residence at Saint Francis School in Louisville, Kentucky. She has also worked as a photography reviewer and columnist for the Chicago New Art Examiner (1976) and for two smaller local newspapers (1974). Since 1978 she has published a large number of articles in American Home Crafts, Ladies’ Home Journal, Country Living and Fiberarts magazines, for which she has done the text as well as the design and the photography.
Amow has been a member of SPE since 1976 and joined the Wisconsin Women in Publishing from 1975 to 1977.
