Understory: Lumen Prints of Florida Flora is a stirring effort to capture the beauty and habitat changes in central Florida's Pine Flatwoods environment, which was once the largest ecosystem in Florida. Unlike traditional photographers, Burchfield works in conjunction with nature, producing camera-less one-of-a-kind photographic images in the wilderness, using natural processes that date back to the origins of photography. Working on a large scale, Burchfield was able to make images of whole trees and a 10' x 30' mural of a whole Pine Flatwoods ecosystem. The result is an amazing collection of images - from the representational to abstractions of color, shape, and form - which encapsulate the essence of the plants and echo the cycle of life.

Jerry Burchfield was born on July 28, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
Jerry Burchfield attended California State University at Fullerton, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Photocommunications in 1971 and an Master of Arts with an emphasis on photography in 1977.
Jerry Burchfield was working as a part-time instructor at California State University in Fullerton, at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, and at the Laguna Beach School of Art. Since 1976 he has been the co-owner and co-director of BC Space, a contemporary photography gallery and custom lab service in Laguna Beach. The artist works almost exclusively with color photography. His style has varied since 1974 but his concerns remain the same.
