Jan Holmevik was born on April 15, 1966, in Geiranger, Norway. He is a son of Johannes and Erna (Hole) Holmevik.
Jan Holmevik studied at Norwegian University of Science and Technology where he received a Candidatus magisterii degree in 1991 and a Candidatus philologiae degree in 1994. He also attended the University of Bergen where he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Humanistic Informatics in 2004.
Jan Holmevik started his career as a teacher at elementary and junior high schools in 1987, in Eidsdal, Norway. The same year he took up a post of researcher and programmer for “CALLMOO-Project” at the University of Bergen. He held this post until 1998. He also worked as a researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research from 1994 to 1996. From 1995 to 2006 he worked as a system administrator and director of “Lingua MOO”, which he co-founded with Cynthia Haynes. In 2013 he took up a post of professor of English at Clemson University. He works as a visiting assistant professor of humanistic informatics.
Jan Holmevik research interests are interactive media, computer game studies, humanistic informatics, visual communication, and experience design. He is an editor and contributor to such books as High Wired: On the Design, Use, and Theory of Educational MOOs and Global Literacy Practices and the WWW? Cultural Perspectives on Information Distribution, Interpretation, and Use. In 2000 he published his book MOOniversity: A Students Guide to Online Learning Environments. Holmevik and Haynes have organized the World of Warcraft academic guild.
